Week 2 Tutorial
Visual thinking
We recognise and pay respect to the Elders and
communities – past, present, and emerging – of the
lands that the University of Sydney's campuses stand
on. For thousands of years they have shared and
exchanged knowledges across innumerable
generations for the benefit of all.
r i r t t t l r communities
- past a d present - of th lands upon which this University
of Sydney campus sits. Indigenous knowledge has been
generated and shared fo thousands of years, underpinned
by a strong connection to land, sea and culture.
We seek to continue to exchange knowledge and build
connections upon these traditions.
Let’s start with
BINGO!
Tutorial Aim
This tutorial will start the
Discovery stage of the Major
Design Project through the
creation of a visual
knowledge map, stakeholder
map and power map
• Knowledge
mapping
• Stakeholder
mapping
• Power mapping
• Wrap Up
• Knowledge
mapping
Knowledge mapping
In this activity you will
create your own individual
knowledge maps of your
research into wayfinding
using the sketchnoting
method
What do I map?
Conduct research, and document,
using sketchnoting:
• What have you discovered
about wayfinding, in general,
interactive wayfinding and
wayfinding on campus?
• Who is affected by campus
wayfinding?
• What are some macro, messo
and micro effects of campus
wayfinding?
Now consider …
• Where are the gaps in the
research?
• Make a list about the areas that
you need to know more about
• Are there connections between
the insights on your map?
• Make those insights more visible
by drawing lines between the
insights and gaps that are
developing on your map.
Pair reflection
• Share an insight/surprise from
your research. Why was this
insight interesting or suprising?
• Share one gap in your
knowledge
• Why is it important to find out
more about this gap in your
knowledge?
• Stakeholder
mapping
Stakeholder
mapping
In this activity you
will consider who the
stakeholders are in relation
to campus wayfinding
What do I map?
• Who/what is a stakeholder?
• Read though the Major Project
brief. Who might be the
stakeholders in this scenario?
• Write each stakeholder on a
post-it and position them on the
stakeholder template on Miro
• Identify if the stakeholder is a
partner, primary or secondary
stakeholder
Pair reflection
• Share an insight/surprise from
your research. Why was this
insight interesting and/or
suprising?
• What are the similarities and/or
differences between your maps?
• Power mapping
Power mapping
In this activity you will consider
the role of stakeholders in relation
to power.
What do I map?
• Map the stakeholders from the
previous activity onto the power
matrix.
• Read though the Major Project
brief again.
• Who/what might have interest or
influence in campus wayfinding?
• Who has power to facilitate a
change to campus wayfinding?
Pair reflection
• Share an insight/surprise from
the power mapping.
• Why was this insight interesting
and/or suprising?
• Share one stakeholder that
has the power to facilitate
change, including how they
could facilitate change and the
amount of power they have.
• Wrap Up
Wrap Up
• Any unexpected insights
from this tutorial?
• Is there anything that’s still
not clear or is confusing?
• Any questions regarding
A1. Content mapping and
exploration?
Before next week
• Week 3 Canvas module
• Complete the mapping tasks
SEE YOU NEXT WEEK!
