Human Computer Interaction
COMP3511 and COMP9511
What is the HCI course?
• To develop your skills in the area of user
interface design
• To teach you the process of user-centred
design including methods, and techniques
• To provide the background knowledge about
how people think and process information
Course Aims
• User interface and visual design principles
• To teach you different data collection methods from
users and how to analyze the collected data
• To give you an understanding of how to design and
develop paper-based and electronic-based prototypes
of user interfaces
• To give you experience in the formal evaluation of user
interfaces for their usability
• To maintain a real-world perspective so this knowledge
can be applied in industry

Laboratories and Tutorials
• Start in Week 1
• Every week
• 2 hour combined tutorial and laboratory
• Online tutorials will be held via Blackboard Collaborate on Moodle.
• The in-person tutorials will be held in different labs (Please check the
timetable).
• Supervised assignment work / checkpoints
• Group discussion
• Practical activities
• Please ensure that all tutorial and lecture exercises are completed by
Friday midnight (23:59) of each week.
• Compulsory attendance – please make sure to attend the designated lab
time
• You must attend at least 80% of all tutorials to pass the course, unless
documented special consideration is in place.
OneNote space
• In each lab and during lectures you should do
some exercises and write them into your
OneNote space that is called OneNote
• We will be using online digital OneNote – each of
you will have a private OneNote that only your
tutor can access for marking
• You can still use pen and paper and upload
images into your OneNote

Assessment
Assignment 1 (individual)
• In this assignment you will critically analyse
the user interface of a Non-Profit Organization
website such as Red Cross, UNICEF, Salvation
Army.
• Will be released by the end of next week.
• It relies on the content covered in the first
three weeks of lectures.
Assignment 2 (group work)
• In this group assignment, you will be
exposed to the initial phases of the user
centred design process. The outcome will be
a simple prototype that you will evaluate
using formal usability tests.
• You should design a prototype of a charity
related website.
• Will start from week 5 until week 10
Late Penalties
• Late penalties will apply to all assessable work
• Assignments -5% per day deducted from the
assessable mark
