GEOL0073 COURSE WORK REPORT PRESENTATION & MARKING
GUIDE
Total marks = 50 marks
The following serves as a guide on what you are expected to present on each part of the
report
1.0 Introduction, aims and objectives (3 marks)
❖ Start with the importance of GIS and Remote sensing as a tool for
environmental evaluation and decision making
❖ State the aim of your report
2.0 Methods: (6 marks)
❖ Discuss the significance of each criteria that would be used in the
decision making process.
❖ Highlight the GIS operations that will be used for the decision making
3.0 Results (15 marks):
❖ This is where you provide the GIS outputs for each of the criteria
used in the decision making.
❖ That is, produce an exported map with scale, legend and orientation,
of each of the following, for the area:
(i). Land use and Land cover (4 marks)
Figure 1: Land use Land cover map of West Midlands, UK
❖ Here, produce an exported map with scale, legend and orientation, of the
Land use land cover map of the area with appropriate classifications
❖ Also make a brief discussion on the Land use land cover map, that you
have produced.
(ii). Terrain analysis (elevation, slope, aspect, contour) (4 marks) – 1 mark for each
Figure 2 (a, b, c, d): Terrain analysis (elevation, slope, aspect, contour), one map for each terrain
feature.
❖ Here, produce exported maps with scale, legend, and orientation, of the
elevation, slope, aspect, and contour of the area.
(iii). Human infrastructure, built up extent (3 marks)
Figure 2: Built up extent map of West Midlands, UK
❖ Here, produce an exported map with scale, legend and orientation, of the
built up extent of the area
(iv). Surface hydrology (rivers) (2 marks)
Figure 3: Surface hydrology map of West Midlands, UK
❖ Here, produce an exported map with scale, legend and orientation, of the
Surface hydrology (rivers network), of the area
(v). Natural disaster, flooding potential (2 marks)
Figure 4: Flooding potential areas map of West Midlands, UK
❖ Here, produce an exported map with scale, legend and orientation, of the
Flooding potential areas, of the area
4.0 Discussions (15 marks)
❖ Here you will discuss the GIS operations carried out to identify the suitable
locations (2 marks)
❖ Produce exported maps with scale, legend and orientation, for each of those
operations, eg. Buffered and cliped built up areas, water courses, flooding
potential areas, etc (4 marks)
Figure 5: 100m buffered and dissolved output of built-up area, of West Midland, UK
Figure 6: 200m buffered and dissolved output of water courses map of West Midland, UK
Figure 7: 1000m buffered and dissolved output of flooding potential map of West Midland, UK
(each of these must be a map output with scale, legend, and orientation)
❖ Changing vectors to rasters (4 marks).
These ones can just be the screenshots of the rasterised output:
e.g a screen shot of each of the 3 layers of raster from the previous vectors.
Figure 8: Screenshot of the Raster output for the built-up area.
Figure 9: Screenshot of the Raster output for the flooding potential areas
Figure 10: Screenshot of the Raster output for the watercourse links
❖ Next is the creation of proximity rasters (2 marks)
Figure 11: Screenshot of the Proximity rasters for the flooding potential areas.
Figure 12: Screenshot of the Proximity rasters for the watercourse links
Figure 13: Screenshot of the Proximity rasters for the Built up areas
❖ The final operations carried out to arrive at the final output (3 marks)
❖ Here, only state or describe the final operations carried out to arrive at the
final output – 1 mark
(You also need to produce the screenshots of each these operation )
Final overlay
Figure 14: Screenshot of the Overlay of the Reclassified proximity rasters for the water courses,
flooding potential areas, and built-up extent. – (1 mark)
Figure 15: Screenshot of the Clipped overlay of the Reclassified proximity rasters for the water
courses, flooding potential areas, and built-up extent. (1 mark).
5.0 Conclusion (4 marks)
❖ This is where you display the output map for your most suitable
possible locations the proposed project.
❖ It must be an exported map with scale, legend and orientation
❖ You can also make a brief discussion on the suitability of these areas
with respect to land use and the terrain analysis.

6.0 Relevant list of references (2 marks), at least bewteen 5 references list for the 2
marks
7.0 Overall presentation, structure, and quality of the report. (5 marks)
