Assignment ELEC4614
You are required to submit this hand-in assignment for ELEC4614. The mark from this assignment will contribute to
10% of your final class mark. You are expected to submit this hand-in assignment using a PDF file via the Assignment
2 link on the Moodle page before 3pm on the Friday of week 8 T1 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted. You
must include a signed cover sheet declaring that the work submitted is your own work and this must be the first page
of the assignment. The cover sheet is on the Openlearning site.
Question 1
a) A power supply is required that converts 10V to 6V with a maximum output current of 3A into a 2Ω load.
Assuming a Buck converter operating in CCM, calculate the average input current, Id, and the inductor
current IL.
[2 marks]
b) In the same circumstances, but using a Buck-Boost circuit, highlight the difference in the inductor current, IL.
[1 marks]
c) A power supply is required to boost a 12V battery output to 48V. Two possible options are to use a boost
converter or a buck-boost converter operating in CCM. For each circuit determine the required D and
compare their average inductor current.
[4 marks]
d) Calculate the number of turns required for an inductance of 1mH. You should assume that you are using a
toroidal ferrite core that has an inductance of 50uH with 5 turns wound on the core. In addition to deciding
the number of turns, calculate the maximum current allowable in the 1mH inductor coil if the ferrite
material in the toroid core saturates at 300mT and the 50uH core saturates at 50A dc current.
