Document Analysis Supplementary Assessment: Guidelines and Information
For this supplementary assessment, you will summarise the key points concerning the
programme of the throne room of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II as presented in the
article by Irene Winter that you will find on Moodle.
Winter, Irene. 1983. The Program of the Throne Room of Aššurnasirpal II at Nimrud.
In Essays on Near Eastern Art and Archaeology in Honor of Charles Kyrle Wilkinson,
edited by Prudence O. Harper and Holly Pittman, 15-31. New York: The Metropolitan
Museum of Art.
Instructions:
Please carefully and thoroughly read the attached article about the throne room of the
first king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. Summarize concisely and accurately the key
arguments and evidence specifically related to the ideological programme of the throne
room. The goal of this project is not a point-by-point summary of everything in Winter’s
chapter, and it is not a research essay on Assyrian art more broadly. Not every piece of
information in Winter’s chapter is immediately relevant to the ideological programme; you
should put aside the extraneous information and focus on providing Winter’s key arguments
for the programme of the throne-room and the evidence she presents for them. In some cases
a single argument, or the evidence for it, is laid out at various places in the article. Your
summary should bring those elements together rather than necessarily following the sequence
presented in the article.
Formatting:
This summary should be formatted as a short essay. The word count for this is 750
words (+/- 10%). You should include a bibliography with one entry: Winter’s article. In-text
references (but not the bibliography) are included in your word count.
Referencing:
This is an academic work and requires referencing. You will be using a single source
for this project (Winter’s article), but you will be assessed on correct referencing and
bibliography. Referencing and bibliography should be conducted according to the Citing and
Referencing for Archaeology and Ancient History guide available on Moodle. You must use
parenthetical in-text citations with page numbers every time you refer to an idea or
statement in the Winter article and include a bibliography with a correct listing of the article.
A proper citation should include the author, the year of publication and the appropriate page
number (e.g., Winter 1983, 16). This assessment will not pass without correct
referencing.
Assessment:
You will be assessed on your ability to identify the main arguments presented by
Winter on the topic and the key evidence upon which those arguments are founded. You
will also be assessed on the structure of your information and your written expression
(proofreading, editing, and your ability to present material in your own words). This
supplementary assessment will be graded on a pass/fail basis only. A rubric can be found
under the Document Analysis assignment on Moodle.
Learning Outcomes:
The Document Analysis project is designed to help you learn how to carefully
analyse an academic article.
