Task Summary
In this Assessment, you are to design a new artificial intelligence (AI) –based application (app) for the
purposes of ordering items off a menu at a restaurant. There are two parts to this task:
1) A report of 500 words (+/–10%) describing your plans for the design of the prototype;
and
2) An interactive prototype containing mock-ups of three screens that include functionality
so that the prototypean be visualised in action.
Note: You will be using a prototyping tool whereby many of the above tasks can be undertaken with
the help of templates and tutorials.
Please refer to the Task Instructions (below) for details on how to complete this task.
Context
Designing an app, using a human centred design (HCD) process that has a real-world application, will
help solidify the diverse range of processes, factors and issues that need to be considered when
designing technology for humans.
In this final assessment for HCD206, you will consolidate what you have learnt over the subject by
applying this knowledge in creative practice and explaining the rationale for your choices and design.
Task Instructions
When dining at a restaurant, diners are often faced with a variety of paper-based menus that either
list the delicacies on offer in a text-based format (using fancy fonts or mundane everyday fonts) or
display photographs of the masterpiece dishes on offer to entice diners’ tastebuds.
Imagine that you have joined a project to redesign the experience of ordering food at restaurants for
diners. The team responsible for the inspiration and understanding phase has conducted extensive
research and identified the following problems in the process:
• Customers often struggle to decide what to eat.
• Health issues, such as how the COVID-19 outbreak led to a trend to avoid sharing paper-based
menus.
• Costs (restaurateurs often have to pay each time there is an update to the menu or when
ingredients change, making the process costs prohibitive).
Given the above, the suggestion from the team is to develop an app that will solve this real-world
problem.
In this Assessment, you will be given the opportunity to develop technology to replace the menu-
based ordering process by designing an AI-based app that can be run off a diner’s mobile phone or
be used on a restaurant-owned tablet. The app is expected to carry the restaurant’s entire menu
options available, which may differ depending on the day and the time. It will also be driven by an
AI-based engine that will personalise recommendations based on who the user is, what they ordered
previously and what they have ordered thus far in the process.
Designing the latter two aspects of the task falls outside the scope of this Assessment. However, you
should assume these two aspects will be implemented at another stage and thus design an interface
consisting of several screens (see details below) for the ordering process using the app.
In this Assessment, you will produce and develop: a 500-word report and a prototype of your
solution.
When you undertake these tasks, you should design with these factors in mind:
1. Choose the type of restaurant for which will you design the app: Its demographic, cuisine,
restaurant style and ambience (e.g., casual or fine dining).
2. Consider any cultural factors related to ordering food at such a restaurant. Refer to existing
practices for ordering food at such a restaurant and consider whether you will make any
changes to the meal-selection process. If you intend to make any such changes, you will
need to include a description of your rationale for doing so.
3. Design by considering the types of diners at whom the app will be targeted (e.g., those with
cognitive, hearing, visual or physical impairments; accessibility factors) and the specific design
features you plan to use to cater to their needs.
4. Consider any ethical issues that may arise as part of designing the interface for this app (e.g.,
will you give the user a choice to let the AI-engine recommend items for other courses based
on their current choices?).
Note: There is no need to design payment processes as part of this Assessment.
For the Report
Note: You will be designing mock-ups for the following three UI screens on the app: 1) an ‘Entrée’
screen; a 2) ‘Main’ screen; and 3) a ‘Dessert’ screen.
1. Given the above notes, in this first step, you will assess the due diligence applied by the
team responsible for the inspiration and empathise phase. Which research techniques would
you check that they performed? (List these). What are some of the potential pitfalls in their
initial research that you should be mindful of? Briefly write down your assumptions about
the target audience and restaurant type/cuisine as you make this assessment.
2. Include a technique (such as a Storyboard or Journey Map) to ideate your design for ONE
scenario that you envisage will take place in the app (e.g., changing the items/quantity once
a diner has made their initial choices). For example, you might choose to draw out the
process of choosing entrées for four people, mains for two people and desserts for three
people, and then go back to the entrée screen and change the items or quantity, after which
you might add an item to the mains. (You can use an app of your choice to create and then
insert a screenshot of the Storyboard or Journey Map in the report or take a photograph of
your hand-drawn framework).
Write a brief description of how your prototype addresses any factors that you considered
to ensure that your app caters to a variety of audiences and outline any ethical issues you
considered.
