Research Proposal
Instruction
In this assignment, you are asked to write a research proposal following intructions provided in
Lecture 8. The main points are listed below. The proposal should be no more than 2,000 words
(excluding the title page and references). Your report must be word processed using 12 point
font and double spacing. You should upload your research report via the “Turnitin” submission
link (in the “Research Proposal” folder under “Assessment”) by 4 pm on the due date 17
November 2023. You are strongly encouraged to submit your work reasonably earlier than the
deadline, to avoid potential technical issues. Late submission will not be accepted. Do not hand
in a hard copy. You are allowed to work on this assignment in reading groups. However, this
is not a group assignment, which means that you must write up a research proposal in your
own words and submit your work separately. The marking system will check the similarity, and
UQ’s student integrity and misconduct policies on plagiarism apply.
1 Introduction
State the problem to be solved. Why is it important? Suppose you solve the problem,
how would a policy maker use the results and what is their significance?
Discuss the state of the art (i.e., previous work) and explain why, despite/because
of this literature, there remains: (i) confusion; (ii) misunderstanding; (iii) errors; or
(iv) some unresolved problem. Alternatively, present an empirical puzzle that the existing
literature fails to explain.
State the essence of your contribution, that is, your solution to the problem or puzzle.
Give the reader a sense of how you solve the problem; provide some confidence that if she
reads the rest of your paper, she has a chance of learning something.
2 Literature Review
Synthesize existing literature that most closely relates to your research questions. How
are they relevant? What are their limitations?
3 Economic Theory
It may not be necessary for you to include this section. The theoretical model is different
from the econometric model. Your research proposal should have an econometric model,
since this is an applied econometrics course.

4 Data
Describes the data, including a detailed discussion of its sources.
What are the outcome and control variables?
Mention the strong points of the dataset.
Why is this dataset important and special in answering your research question.
Present summary statistics for the variables if you can.
5 Econometric Analysis
Identify the estimable equations and econometric techniques that you use.
Justify the econometric techniques that you are planning to use.
Discuss potential econometric issues and how you plan to handle them.
6 Result
Discuss potential results.
Argue why the results are important and what are their policy implications.
