GEOS2111/2911, ASSIGNMENT 3 (DUE WEEK 12)
EARTHQUAKES ASSIGNMENT
Your assignment requires that you write a report based on the QGIS practical exercises on
earthquakes that you completed in Weeks 8-9. Specifically, your report should address the following:
Not all earthquakes are created equal. Discuss in terms of the factors affecting the severity of an
earthquake disaster and how these have varied through space and time.
Your answer must be supported with maps, graphs and real-world examples and use independently
sourced, peer-reviewed articles.

2. Date handed out
Available on Canvas from Week 5
3. Submission date and procedure
The submission date for this assignment is Friday 27th October, 2023 @ 5pm (end of Week 12). Submit
via Canvas and through Turnitin.
4. Date assessed work will be returned
The results from this assignment will be made available through Canvas approximately two weeks
later.
5. Aims and learning outcomes
The aims of this exercise are to:
• Develop in-depth research skills associated with undertaking a research topic; and
• Develop the skill of writing a report with the integration of figures generated in QGIS
On successful completion of this exercise, you will be able to:
!"#$%&''()**+,-./-0('( 12,/(%(34(%(
• undertake a detailed piece of research and use a combination of plain English and clearly
designed figures to present the results of that research. The assignment is also designed to test
your wider communication and presentation skills.
6. Objectives
This assignment has been designed to expose you to a different type of written communication in the
assessment of natural hazards, as compared to the policy brief/national geographic article of
assignment 1. This assignment requires you to write more in the style of a government report and
supported by figures generated by you in QGIS. Employers of graduates have told us that they want
their graduate employees to be able to communicate effectively (in written form) in a variety of ways
and for different target audiences. This assignment is designed to develop your generic attribute of
writing. It integrates the skills that you developed in GIS, another important attribute that employers
seek.
7. Procedure
The final output must be 1500 words in length (+/- 10%). This word limit excludes the reference list
and figure captions. It must be word processed with a minimum of 11 pt. The report should include an
introduction, methodology, a combined results/discussion section, and short conclusion. You must include
at least 5 maps and/or graphs that were generated during your QGIS practicals on earthquakes in
Weeks 8-9 and these figures need to be embedded within the report. You must refer to at least three
case studies. Please use in-text citations and provide a reference list with at least three independently-
sourced peer-reviewed articles using a consistent referencing style of your choice. The document may
be submitted either as a pdf (preferred) or word document (note: saving as a pdf will ensure that your
formatting and figure placement will be maintained).
8. Marking scheme
This assignment is worth 20% of the overall unit mark. Assignment rubric can be found on Canvas.
