Workshop 8: Networks: LANs, WLANs
FIT1047
ABM Russel, Joseph Liu, Carsten Rudolph
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, you will:
• Understand Media Access Control for Ethernet and WLAN
• Learn about WLAN (service sets, channels, typical set-up)
• Describe how forwarding tables work in Ethernet switches
• Understand how large organisations can organise their
networks in LANs, WLANs and WANs
ACTIVITY 1A: Switched Ethernet
• Work in a small group
• Create a Jamboard using your Monash account and share within
your group
• Please refer to the pre-class reading materials and videos
• Share what have you learnt about Switched Ethernet
Activity 1 Part A: 20 mins
• Work in a small group
• Task 1A.1: Discuss differences between Hubs, Switches and Routers.
• Task 1A.2: Share reflection on the last week’s Network Design
activity.
Your task is to design a company network. The company has 6 servers and 90 PCs. In
addition, there are 70 mobile phones and 40 tablets that need to be connected via WiFi.
• Improve your network design by including routers and switches.
• How many routers and switches would you need?
To participate, go to:
Use workshop specific join code available in Moodle
ACTIVITY 1B: WiFi
• Work in a small group
• Create a Jamboard using your Monash account and share within
your group
• Please refer to the pre-class reading materials and videos
• What have you learnt about WiFi?
Activity 1 Part B: 10 mins
• Work in a small group
• Task 1B.1: Discuss the “hidden node problem” in WiFi LAN
• Task 1B.2: Find and share some characteristics of the WiFi 6
(802.11ax).
To participate, go to:
Use workshop specific join code available in Moodle
Break: 10 mins
ACTIVITY 2A: WiFi Topologies and
Security
• Work in a small group
• Create a Jamboard using your Monash account and share within
your group
• Please refer to the pre-class reading materials and videos
• What have you learnt about WiFi Topologies and Security
Activity 2 Part A: 20 mins
• Work in a small group
• Task 2A.1 : Research and discuss how to improve WiFi performance.
• Task 2A.2 : WiFi network design
Assume that you have to provide Wireless LAN access for a two-story office building that is 50 meters
long and 25 meters wide. An access point can cover an area of 20 by 20 meters.
How many access points do you need to cover the whole building?
Design the WiFi network.
To participate, go to:
Use workshop specific join code available in Moodle
ACTIVITY 2B: LANs, MANs, WANs
• Work in a small group
• Create a Jamboard using your Monash account and share within
your group
• Please refer to the pre-class reading materials and videos
• What have you learnt about LANs, MANs and WANs
Activity 2 Part B: 10 mins
● Work in a small group
● Task 2B.1: Research and discuss some issues (such as security,
reliability, and performance) when using Internet.
● Task 2B.2: Share some real-world benefits or drawbacks of using
VPN.
