FIT3138 Real Time Enterprise Systems
Value: 20% of final Assessment
Mode of submission: Online on Moodle
Type of Assignment: Group Assignment
Students are required to work in groups of 3.
Assignment Aim and Objectives:
The aim of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their analytical
and research skills through the process of developing a business case to assist Perdue Inc. in their
enterprise systems initiative. In so doing, the following objectives are sought:
❖ To develop skills in producing a succinct and convincing business case;
❖ To develop skills in researching various ERP software vendor and to provide a recommendation;
❖ To develop skills in performing a cost-benefit analysis as well as critically assessing the potential
risks involved and other implementation issues; and
❖ To explore the current trend and technology in real-time enterprise systems.
The Case:
Perdue Farm
(Adapted from: "The Supply Chain Management Casebook: Comprehensive Coverage and Best
Practices in SCM," Chuck Munson, FT Press, New Jersey, 2013.)
Refer to file: “Perdue Farm.pdf” on Moodle for more information.
Perdue Farms is a rapidly growing company with a bold vision: “To be the most trusted name in
food and agricultural products.” Perdue Farm’s vision of year 2030 is to increase sales volume to
$20 billion from its current level of $9.5 billion. They do not just want to grow big but also “to be
the most trusted name in food and agricultural product" – a vision that was established decades
ago by their founder, Arthur and Pearl Perdue.
Today, Perdue is further expanding its production facilities and product variety. They are
developing science-based, research-driven products and services that maximize nutrient
utilization for all stages of the animal’s life cycle. Purdue is currently working directly with local
farmers and traders in the United States, Europe, South America and Asia to source organic grains
and soybeans. They have recently secured a long-term warehouse lease for an organic grain
receiving and storage facility at Tradepoint Atlantic at the Port of Baltimore in Maryland which
will better position the company to meet demand for organic feed ingredients. This new facility
will be part of an integrated supply chain that enables them to increase business and reduce cost
while maintaining the quality of their organic products. Facing the market opportunities and

competition, the management of Perdue is thinking about strategies and methods that will help
the company to realise its vision.
Strategic direction:
The key strategy for Perdue is its commitment to customer satisfaction by delivering the
product(s) at the right time, in the right place and at the right price. Perdue aims to organise
around processes that are focused on value added to customers and to realise their vision of
being the leading and trusted quality food company.
Target areas for improvement:
• To better coordinate all their dealers and be able to better support them, especially with
relevant customer and product information.
• To have optimal control of their demand and inventory management with improved product
traceability capabilities.
• Improved visibility of real-time information throughout the enterprise:
o To seamlessly track profitability and manufacturing costs of all their product range.
o To provide important marketing information such as sales reports for each region, by
product, by customers and by distribution method.
o To better support their business partners (grain farmers, poultry farmers, hog
farmers and beef cattle ranchers) and other stakeholders.
• The ability to perform predictive analytics to support strategic planning and decision.
• Improved speed-of-business and responsiveness through increased mobile capabilities.
To support the corporate structure, Perdue product strategy and strategic initiatives, Perdue
requires a progressive enterprise system that will enable it to support its growth over the next
decade while improving Perdue’s decision-making capabilities.
Requirements:
The board of directors at Perdue has decided to implement an ERP system to streamline their
operations. The management team is currently reviewing their legacy system - the CPFR
(Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment) software that they acquired in the late
1990s from Manugistics. In July 2006, Manugistics was acquired by JDA Software. After the
acquisition by JDA, the Manugistics software was expanded by its new owners to leverage the best
of Manugistics with the existing JDA offering. However, the management team is facing a dilemma
of whether to extend their CPFR system with JDA or to re-engineer their operations with a totally
new vendor, such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics or Infor. They are also unsure if they should
go on the cloud or have it on-premise.
Perdue Board of Directors had heard of just too many horror stories of ERP implementation going
wrong. As such, they are doing everything they could to ensure that their ERP project would be a
success. As part of this initiative, they have engaged your expertise to help them conduct an analysis
and to provide them with a business case with the relevant information to assist them in their
management decision.

of zero for that task and may not receive feedback.
2. All extensions and other individual alterations to the assessment regime will only be considered
using the Special Consideration Application form. Students should carefully read the Special
Consideration website, especially the details about what formal documentation is required. As
this is a group assignment, any extension that is more than 2 days may require the person
applying for special consideration to work on their own, so as not to impact the other team
