MORE INFORMATION SCREEN ARTS “LONG-TAKE” SCREEN WORK For the screen arts block in this unit, you are asked to produce an experimental dramatic or conceptual video project 2 minutes in duration with accompanying sound. The final video must be a “long take”, with no legible cuts or transitions of any kind. The project can use split screens and superimpositions with multiple shots – however they must all be same the length as the overall project (2 mins) and comply with the long take premise of the project. Your project is to be developed by yourself in consultation with your academic advisor. The way you work with this idea is totally up to you. You could shoot on your smart phone, a DSLR, work with found or stock footage, delve into a personal/family archive of film, video, and photography, document a performance, or create a single- take narrative. If you work with found or stock footage all sources should be credited. Some questions you may consider when approaching this project: ● Have you made a conscious choice about everything that is in the frame? (the colours, the composition, the performers (if you have performers), the landscape, the camera movement, the atmosphere) ● How can camera movement be used to communicate dramatic or conceptual meaning, subtext, and thematic intention? ● How can the movement of subjects within the frame, in relation to camera, communicate dramatic or conceptual meaning, subtext and thematic intention? ● When engaging with a single take what is the relationship between viewer, image and time? ● How do artists and filmmakers challenge traditional screen-based representations? ● If working with found footage, how can the footage be re-framed or layered to create a new symbolic or thematic meaning? ● What role does sound play in this process and what relationship does it have to the framed subject or object and the emotion, psychology, and concept communicated? PHOTOMEDIA FILM STILL For the photo media block in this unit, you are asked to produce one digital black and white or colour photograph that best represents the overall narrative and/or theme of your single-take video from your screen arts project. The image can be taken before, during or after you have completed your final video. Either way, the final image must somehow relate to your single-take video, similar to the way a film still gives away slight clues about what the film is about, or the characters/objects it is exploring. Edit the image (using photoshop) in whichever way you like, so long as it meets the brief of the project. Your edits maybe so seamless that you need to explain them in your assessment meeting. Please come prepared to explain your process. This project is looking at the relationship between the moving and the still image and the capacity they each have to carry out a narrative. Your final image will be saved and sent as a jpg (The image must be sized at: 1280 pixels x 720 pixels with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch) and can be taken on your phone or a camera (whatever you have access to). This image will be uploaded onto canvas along with your video for assessment in week 5, and both will be marked together.
