MCD1560: Introduction to Journalism
Assessment 2: Folio of Journalistic Writing
Status: Individual
Weighting: 25%
Word limit: 1,000 (10% leeway)
Due date: Friday Week 9
______________________________________________________________________________________
This task is designed to reinforce material studied during weeks 1–10.
Create a folio demonstrating an understanding of your studies on Journalism in different media genres. A folio
in this context is a collection of examples that you will critically analyse to highlight your acquired knowledge.
The folio should comprise specific examples of five pieces of journalism (you can choose examples from any
country, but they must be in English):
• Newspapers
• Magazines
• Radio
• Television
• Online/digital
Your critical evaluation of each report should discuss how they demonstrate the principles of journalism and
what features distinguish them from other news formats. In your discussion consider differences in
presentation such as approaches to style and journalistic or investigative skills. Consider how the story is
framed and presented and what abilities the journalist demonstrates in each particular example.
The folio will be evaluated on the merits of observation, understanding of course concepts, presentation, and
language use (grammar, spelling, punctuation, editing). Supporting your observations by engaging with the set
readings will also be an important part of your discussion.
This is not an essay, but you should organise your ideas into one or two paragraphs and dedicate
approximately 200 words to each example.
