MID-SEMESTER ONLINE QUIZ INFORMATION (v2.20230822)
This closed-book online quiz is in the form of an online Wattle quiz monitored by the examination integrity
app, Proctorio. The quiz accounts for 15% of the overall course mark. You will find the online quiz on the course
Wattle page. During the quiz, any class-wide announcements will be sent directly to your student email
address. So please check your ANU student email account every 15 minutes or so on your computer (not on
your phone). It is important that you install and test Proctorio on your Browser well before the online quiz.
A demo quiz will take place in Week 5 for you to test Proctorio settings on your
device.
When is the quiz and how long is it for?
• On 28 August 2023 (Monday) from 1-3pm (Canberra time).
• Although the quiz is titled “in-class”, it simply refers to the timing of the quiz, please attempt the quiz
in a quiet and private place where possible.
• Please note that during the quiz, you are NOT allowed to:
Attempt to communicate with anybody other than the course convenor (or Proctorio staff or
ANU IT Help Staff). This means that you cannot, for example, email other people (other than
the lecturer), read emails sent to you (other than from the lecturer), call or text people on
your phone, post or read social media etc.
Block the camera on your computer.
• The total duration of the quiz is 90 minutes (lecture time lasts for 2 hours)
Clock will only start counting once you successfully logged in (all quizzes should start by
1:30pm)
Once you start, the 90-minute clock will count even if you logged out in the middle. So please
set aside sufficient time for this quiz before you decide to start.
Only one attempt is allowed (once submitted, you cannot un-submit / re-submit).
• Proctorio will verify your video settings and your photo ID at the beginning of the quiz.
• Please show your blank A4 working paper to the screen at the start of the quiz.
Permitted Materials:
• Basic non-programmable financial/scientific calculator.
• Dictionary software / online dictionary (e.g. Google Translate / Baidu Translate) — not paper-based.
• 1 x A4 blank paper for workings and stationery.
Materials NOT permitted:
• No phones/tablet/external monitor/external computer is allowed – only one computer and one
screen are to be used.
• No website other than our Course Wattle may be used – except for ANU Student Email which may
only be used to check for course announcements and to contact me for questions. Please note that
you may not use your phone – not even for checking email. Contacting others in any form, including
via email, is considered as plagiarism.
• AI tools are not permitted in the online quiz. The use of AI tools such as ChatGPT is considered
plagiarism.
• You may not keep a copy of the quiz questions.
In addition to the webcam recording you and the environment, Proctorio will screen-capture your
computer and will detect any use of spreadsheets, your browser history during the quiz, copy and paste
clipboard activities, and any other software that is running in the background.
What tools or equipment do I need?
Software: Access the BUSN7008 Wattle site. It is recommended to use Chrome Web Browser, but you
can also use Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Opera or Brave with the Proctorio extension enabled.
Photo ID – e.g. Passport / Official ID / ANU student card (with name in English and your photo).
Hardware: You need to use a computer (a desktop or a laptop) with a functioning web camera when
attempting the quiz with Proctorio enabled on your internet browser. You won’t be able to use a tablet
or smartphone. The following are ways to address any display issues:
o close the Wattle navigation bar on the left hand side of the screen
o maximise the browser window on your computer to ensure all text is visible. If some text is
still not visible when the window is displayed on the full screen, try minimising the text font
size by pressing CTRL + "-" (on PC) or COMMAND + "-" (on Mac) so that all of the text fits in
the window
o increase the screen resolution of your computer monitor.
Internet: You need to have a reliable internet connection. You may wish to consider having a backup
internet connection. This could take the form of using your smartphone as a hotspot in the event of
internet failure on your computer (this will allow you to still complete the quiz on your computer after
it connects wirelessly to your smartphone’s hotspot).
What is the format of the quiz and what does the quiz cover?
Format: In the “Online Quiz” Wattle Quiz link. The quiz contains a mix of practical questions and MCQs.
Simply enter your answers in the space provided and submit it when you finish. You will only be able
to submit it once.
All answers to questions are to be typed/completed within Wattle. That is, do not write your answers
on paper, upload function is disabled (because it is a closed-book quiz and phones are not allowed).
Coverage: All Week 1, 2, 3 & 4 topics are examinable.
How do I save and submit my work?
When taking the Wattle quiz, the system saves your work when:
a. You navigate between questions on different pages
b. You click on “Submit all and finish” at the end of quiz.
c. The quiz times out at the end of the quiz duration.
Once you have completed the Wattle quiz, ensure you submit your responses by clicking “Submit all
and finish” and also the same button in the Confirmation pop-up box.
As only one attempt is allowed for this quiz, you will not be permitted to redo the quiz once you have
click on the “Submit all and finish” button in the Confirmation pop-up box.
What do I do if I encounter any problems during the quiz?
Clarification of quiz questions: For the duration of the quiz, I am contactable via email at
[email protected]. Any class-wide announcements will be sent to your student email address.
So please do check your student email account regularly.
Technical issues: If technical difficulties (e.g., internet connectivity issues) prevent you from
completing the quiz, make sure you provide sufficient evidence (e.g., time-stamped screenshots,
photos and videos) in any special consideration or deferred quiz application that you may submit.
If you experience any technical difficulties with Proctorio quizzes, please ask for help via Proctorio
agent in the quiz (Available 24/7), call IT Service Desk (+61 2 6125 2222) or email
[email protected]. If the problem is unable to be resolved, please email
[email protected] immediately.
What rules should I be aware of?
Special consideration (for sickness or other personal issues that affect your performance in the quiz)
Deferred assessment (for health related issues etc. that stops you from being able to attend the quiz)
Please email Stanley to apply by the day after the quiz. Please note that an approval is not guaranteed.
FAQs:
While I would like to keep things to the point, I strongly believe knowing these backup plans will help calm you
in case of any accident during the quiz. A calm and stable mood will help your performance in the quiz.
1. Proctorio asks for a password to enter the quiz, what is the password?
There is no password for the quiz. Proctorio shouldn’t ask for a password, but sometimes it does ask for
one – especially when too many students (from our course and from other courses) are launching
Proctorio at once.
The easiest solution is to return to the main course Wattle page, wait a few minutes, and try entering the
quiz again. It works 90+% of the time. [See a copy of the standard reply from IT Support on Wattle]
Send me an email ([email protected]) if the problem persists after more than 15 minutes of trying.
Don’t worry about the lost time – because no time is lost. The 90-minute timer will not start counting
unless you successfully log onto it. And where necessary, I will extend the time for the affected students.
2. My internet was slow / My internet was disconnected for some time / Wattle or Proctorio was not
working properly for some time, shall I apply for special consideration or a deferred quiz?
No – unless the internet disruption lasts for more than 30 minutes. The quiz is expected to take 90 minutes
to complete for most students. The lecture duration is 2 hours, which includes a 30-minute buffer to
account for unexpected IT issues.
3. I feel unwell on the day of quiz. Shall I apply for a Deferred Quiz or Special Consideration?
If you are so unwell that you are unable to sit for the quiz Deferred quiz. Please email your application
to Stanley, and please note that an approval is not guaranteed. You will need proper medical
documentation proving that the illness was quite severe, and it significantly affected you on the day of
quiz.
I have seen rejected applications due to: the medical certificate was obtained after the quiz day; the
severity of illness does not justify a deferred quiz (can be subjective at times); most importantly, the
student has browsed/attempted some quiz questions.
Special consideration suits those who sit through the quiz despite illness or other disruptions. The outcome
is a small adjustment in the quiz marks at best.
ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT - IMPORTANT REMINDERS
You must complete the quiz by yourself. You cannot discuss the questions with anyone else.
You are not required to provide in-text citation or references in the online quiz. However, as per the ANU
Academic Misconduct Rule, if a student cheats, engages in plagiarism or improperly colludes with another
person, this is academic misconduct in relation to an assessment. A person engages in plagiarism if the person
uses another person’s work as though it were the person’s own work. This includes excessive copying from
lecture slides, tutorial notes and textbooks.
Students submitting a take-home quiz, an assignment, or a timed Wattle quiz work do so under a declaration
that the work is their own. You are expected to have read and understood the ANU's Academic Misconduct
Rule. Instances of alleged misconduct will be investigated and, where misconduct is found to have been
committed, penalties will be imposed to the full extent of the Rule.
As a further academic integrity control, students may be selected for a 15-minute individual oral examination
of their online quiz submission.
