JUNIOR PHYSICS LAB TEST PART B –WEEK 7
Conducted in the first year labs during booked block in your normal lab session.
In this practical test, you will need to set up the equipment listed below AND obtain data which should be
sufficient to address the aim in a scientifically appropriate manner.
You can plan how to setup the equipment, think about the variables, consider the types of data you will obtain,
and how to present the data before the prac test. We recommend that you also plan the amount of data and
repeated measurements such that the actual data is sufficient to address the aim. Think about how to take the
measurements with detail and care such that the aim can be addressed in a scientifically appropriate manner.
In other words, lining up the start point, checking scales.
You will not be required to do calculations, analysis and interpretation.
Practical 3: Do longer pendulums swing slower or faster?
Aim of experiment: To determine the relationship between the length of a swinging pendulum and its
oscillation period.
Theory: The oscillation period of a pendulum swinging with a small angle is related to the length of
the pendulum and the gravitational acceleration constant by: = 2%/
where T is the oscillation period, is the length of the pendulum and is the gravitational
acceleration constant.
Your task in the test:
• Bring your SID card for validation.
• Setup the equipment listed and shown below. No other materials are to be used.
• Describe experimental procedure and sketch set up.
• Take measurements. A tutor will check one measurement as you take and record it.
• Record sufficient measurements taken with care and detail forming the data.
• Note and record uncertainties.
