ASSIGNMENT 3 – Individual Measurement and Estimating Task (30 Marks)
PURPOSE OF ASSIGNMENT 3
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Demonstrate an ability and understanding of measurement and estimating principles and
practices through practical measurement tasks with a focus on measuring quantities and
estimating unit rates for the preparation of tenders by using information technology.
Accordingly, the following unit learning outcomes are to be achieved through Assignment 3:
ULO1: Integrate the principles and practices of measurement and estimating.
ULO2: Demonstrate the use of the Australian Standard Method of Measurement as a tool
for completing measurement and estimating.
ULO3: Measure quantities and estimate unit rates to prepare tenders for common types
of low and medium-rise construction.
ULO4: Utilise information technology, especially Building Information Modelling (BIM) for
measurement and estimating.
ASSIGNMENT TASK
Measure internal finishes to floors, walls and, ceilings and prepare ‘Priced BQ’ for the
proposed house to be constructed in Melbourne, Victoria (refer to the attached drawings) in
accordance with ASMM-6 or ANZSMM.
You are required to measure the works and calculate unit rates for the items within the work
sections, which appear in your BQ. Where information/specification is missing or unclear, you
can make reasonable assumptions and write on the query sheet.
Please include the following in the Assessment 3 Report:
I. Summary of total estimated cost.
II. Priced BQ
a. Enter unit rates for each BQ item and extend the rates to determine the cost
for each of the work sections and the total cost for the works.
III. Build-up rates for each item.
a. You are required to compute the build-up rates based on material, plant and
labour costs. Note that the aim of this task is to calculate the unit rates, and
not look up the rates in Rawlinson’s or some other reference book, you may,
however, use Rawlinsons to cross-check your build-up rates.
