MTH305 Final Exam Instructions
General information
1. The final exam is online via the Learning Mall platform.
• For the implementation, please follow the instructions given by the Academic Services
of the University.
2. This is an open-book exam.
• Students are permitted to take references from LM materials, books, reading notes,
and other materials you think helpful for you, either hardcopies or files on electronic
device 1.
• Students must abide by the University’s rules and regulations for online examinations,
e.g., regulation of electronic devices and software that can or cannot be used.
• No electronic devices are allowed other than the two devices for accessing LMO and
invigilation purposes.
• Students are not allowed to use the internet except for accessing LMO.
• The use of email is only allowed in emergencies such as submission failure, and must
be authorised by the invigilators.
3. Time allowed is 2 hours.
• For submission and its grace time, please follow the instructions given in the exam
paper.
4. There are three parts in the final exam: Part I Problem Solving and Analysing (via quiz,
30%), Part II Excel Work (40%), and Part III MATLAB work (30%).
Exam details
1. Part I Problem Solving and Analysing (via quiz)
• There are three problems to solve in Part I, and each problem contains three
numerical and essay questions.
• The time limit is 30 minutes.
• Students must complete Part I first. The quiz opens at the start time of the exam
and closes in 35 minutes.
• For the format, please refer to the mock quiz [updated] on LMO.
• Pay attention to significant figures and decimal places. For instance, 0.0123 has
three significant figures, and 0.01 has 2 decimal places.
• Make sure you submit your quiz questions before the quiz closes. When time is up,
the system will submit your unfinished quiz automatically.
• No password is required to enter the quiz.
• You will have no chance to go back to review the questions. Please be very careful
before you click ‘next’.

2. Part II Excel Work
• There are three problems to solve in Part II.
• Students will work on one Excel template file that contains three questions.
• There will be detailed instructions in the exam paper.
• The format is similar to the Excel exercises in the labs of Weeks 5 and 11.
• Students are recommended to use the Microsoft Excel, and must test their version
of Excel using the Excel template files of computer labs.
• When opening the Excel file, if it prompts to enable macros, just enable the
function. Otherwise, no action is needed.
o If there is red Security Risk/Warning or Protected View, you may close the
file – right click the file – ‘Properties’ to unblock. Or refer to the link below:
• When saving the Excel file, it may prompt a warning message about compatibility.
Just click ‘continue’, and finish saving.
• Students are required to enable MS Excel Solver before the exam.
o To install the Solver, click ‘File’ – ‘Options’- ‘Add-Ins’ – at the bottom ‘Go’
– check ‘Solver Add-in’.
o For Mac users, go to ‘Tools’ – ‘Excel Add-ins…’ – check ‘Solver Add-in’.
o Detailed instructions can be found under Week 5 computer lab on LMO.
3. Part III MATLAB work
• There is one problem in Part III.
• Students will work on one MATLAB template file.
• There will be detailed instructions in the exam paper.
• The format is similar to CW2.
• Please make sure that the downloaded data files are in the ‘Current Folder’ of
MATLAB, so that data can be imported by the command given in the template file.
• Students must test their version of MATLAB using the MATLAB template files of
computer labs.
• You are recommended to install at least the following toolboxes. You may check
by typing ‘ver’ in the Command Window of MATLAB.
o Matlab
o Simulink
o Econometrics Toolbox
o Optimization Toolbox
o Statistics and Machine Learning Toolbox
4. Submission of Parts II and III.
• Students submit Parts II and III in one submission link.
• Submit your worked Excel template file, the worked MATLAB template file, the
results.mat file (from Part III), and any other function files that are in associate
with the template files that you have used.

• You can submit up to 10 files.
• There is no need to zip files.
• Please do not change the name of template files.
5. No formula sheets or statistical tables will be provided.
6. If you think there is any problem in the exam questions, please do your best to answer
the question, and contact the module leader after the exam.
7. If there are any problems, please inform the invigilators first.
