Quiz 2 is worth 20% of your final mark. There are two questions and you have to
answer both of them. Question 1 is worth 8 marks and Question 2 is worth 12 marks.
You can work on these questions in your own time and you need to submit your
answers through the Turnitin link on Wattle any time before the due date.
Question 1 - Approximately 600 words [8 marks]
This question does not require you to undertake any analysis yourself. Rather, you are
being asked to critique an existing paper on “The social integration of international migrants:
Evidence from the networks of Syrians in Germany” by Bailey et al. (2022). The paper is
available at the following link:
Answer the following questions in your own words.
1a) What are the research questions and what data is used to test those questions? Include a
discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the data used in this paper. [2 marks]
1b) What are the main data analysis techniques used to test those research questions (from
part a)? Describe at least one of those techniques in detail. [3 marks]
1c) How could the analysis be extended using a different technique covered in the course, or
by transforming or interacting one or more of the variables? [3 marks]
Question 2 – Approximately 600 words [12 marks]
This question requires you to undertake your own analysis and data collection on the
topic of “unemployment” using time-series data. This can be for Australia or any other
country of your choice.
2a) Explain in your own words what time series data is, what its advantages and
disadvantages are, and what the main assumptions and techniques are for setting up time
series data before doing any analysis. You may include references to other literature or to the
lecture material in your explanation. [2 marks]
2
2b) Describe your own economic research question related to “unemployment” that can be
analysed with time-series data. State your null and alternative hypotheses. [2 marks]
2c) What data will you need to test your research question from part 2b? Identify data sources
where you can find this time-series data and download it. Examples of data sources that are
publicly available include the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the World Bank, the IMF, the
Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis (FRED), and others. [Note: if the data is not available at
any publicly available sources, you may need to change your research question in part 2b so
that it can be answered using data that is available] [2 marks]
2d) Test the main time-series assumptions in Stata (that you described in part 2a) and briefly
explain what you find. [2 mark]
2e) Describe a suitable model to test your hypothesis from part 2b (including the equations
and an explanation of each coefficient). [2 marks]
2f) Estimate the model from part 2e in Stata to test your hypothesis from part 2b. Present
your findings in a Table and interpret the sign and the statistical significance of the
coefficients. Do you find evidence to support your research hypothesis? Explain. [2 marks]
Include your Stata code (log file) in your assignment submission.
