LINB29H3 Short Assignment
Curt Anderson Fall University of Toronto Scarborough
The file short_hw4.txt contains speech data, where VOT (Voice Onset Times) for [t]s
were measured in milliseconds. Assume that the voice onset times where the FACTOR is “A”
were measured from productions of [t] from native speakers of English,
while those VOT values labeled with FACTOR “B” were measured from speech
production from non-native speakers. Your H0 is that the voice onset times in
A are drawn from the same population as those in B. Do the following:
1. Test for assumptions and choose an appropriate statistical test to analyze the data.
Ex- plain why you chose that particular test
2. Formulate a non-directional alternative hypothesis.
3. Run that test. 4. Report and interpret the results (what do the results mean?).
You should report your results in the style discussed in the lectures
(the examples of which are based on the Gries textbook).
Note: For each question, show the appropriate steps, including R code used to answer that question. 1
