This assessment This document will give you a more detailed look within the critical summary assignment and hopefully provide you with some helpful tips on how to succeed! This assignment assesses your ability to orchestrate voices in an academic context. Within the assignment it’s important that you fully research and thoroughly discuss the state of knowledge and the research gap, around your topic, so that you can logically derive your research question. You should read, summarize and orchestrates voices from at least eight articles (i.e. three presented in the Research Proposal and three new articles). In around 350–500 words, you should discuss: (1) definition(s); (2) the current state of knowledge and (3) the research gap (i.e., knowledge deficit) and the research question. Within the assignment, you will be expected to use critical thinking and produce new knowledge. This assignment is very important as it will become the backbone of the introduction for your Final Paper. Purpose Purpose of LEARNING - To polish your skills for orchestrating voices - To draft the introduction in your final paper so that you can obtain some comments for further improvement Purpose of WRITING • To explain the key concepts and explore the knowledge gap in a critical manner Organizational Structure (350 – 500 words, including everything except the references) - General Introduction (30 words) - Definitions (100-150 words; 1-2 citations) - State of Knowledge (150-250 words; 5-6 citations) o What has been done? o What has been found? - Knowledge Gap (50 words) - Research Question (20 words) - References Writing instructions - General Introduction → Start your Critical Summary - Definitions (1-2 citations) o Refer to academic articles for proper definitions o Discuss how these definitions are the same / different (orchestration) - State of Knowledge (5-6 citations) o (1) What has been done? (2) What has been found? o Expand this based on your proposal o Orchestration: Your voice + ideas from citations! - Knowledge Gap (To be revised, based on your proposal) - Research Question (To be revised, based on your proposal) - References (To be drafted based on what you have included in Critical Summary) Referencing and Citation Style - Assumed to be APA - If you are not using APA, note the citation style you are using in the assignment comment box - Citations will be required for the definitions and state of knowledge and may appear in the research gap section. Frequently Asked Questions 1. Just making sure, is our word count for everything up to but not including our reference list? You are right: everything, except the reference list (which only includes links) This includes headings and in-text references. 2. Is it possible to slightly change our research question for our final essay/critical summary after submitting our research proposal? Yes, you can change your research question / methodology / state of knowledge any minute you like. In fact, after I have approved your proposal, you should actively evaluate your research progress. Complete everything based on the actual situation. For example, after doing some analysis, students just do not want to work on this any more. Feel free to change anything! You may talk to me so that I can give you some advice. Or you can just make the change yourself. 3. if we in-text cite our data set in the critical summary, does that count towards our minimum requirement of 6 sources needed in the essay portion of our paper? Yes, to meet the assignment requirement. However, citing the data set does not help with any writing purposes in critical summary. If the data set comes with a article, I can see why you want to cite the article. However, I really do not see why you need to cite the data set. 4. If we cited a textbook twice (different pages) to show two different conceptual relationships, does it count as one source or two sources? Same author and same source: one source. 5. Can we have numbers in the definition section? Yes, if it is a theoretical definition. For example, WHO defined appropriate amount of physical activity as “doing XX hours physical activity a day”. 6. We should not use any secondary citation in critical summary and bibliography? You are not encouraged to do so. Still, it should be fine if you have one. 7. Do we need separate sub-headings for what has been done and what has been found? Or are separate paragraphs enough? Having two paragraphs would be sufficient. You do not need to have headings for this purpose, not for this assignment and not for the final paper. 8. Do I have to include headings? No, not for the Critical Summary assignment. Headings are considered to be a layout issue. You will HAVE TO include headings for the final paper, but not the Critical Summary. 9. Can I skip the General Introduction? I will not be assessing the content of the General Introduction. However, this section aims at starting your assignment properly. If you start your assignment in an inappropriate way, e.g. “various studies…”, your mark for organization will be affected. 10. Is the order of types of orchestration features, e.g. facilitation, or generalization etc. important? No. But the nature of “facilitation” is to facilitate, so it is normal that you start with a topic sentence, i.e. facilitation. Common Problems - Not including all orchestration features - Writing too much - Using dated sources (i.e. > 20 years) - Not having and/or discussing academic definitions - Not including a reference list (i.e. links)
