IOT CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
IAB230: Design of Enterprise IoT
OBJECTIVE
In Assessment 2, you decide which topic among 2-3 alternative individual topics (which you have done in
the Assessment 1) you would like to continue to work on. In Assignment 2, you will reflect on the chosen
topic, expand and develop a more detailed specification and design outputs. Assignment 2 involves design
components and mock-ups of your IoT solution. You are expected to design user interaction with your IoT
system (using use cases created from user stories, and how messages are exchanged between interaction
partners). You must develop 2-3 static screens (use Balsamiq or similar tool) of some key screens of a UI
that allow users to interact with your IoT solution.
Note: Where diagrams are required, they need to be described and discussed in paragraphs. Hence, diagrams
are not counted towards words limit.
Assessment: This assessment is worth 40% and a group-based assignment (2-3 students per group). Only
one submission by one of the group members is sufficient.
Submission deadline: Friday 4 June 23:59.
Where to submit: You need to submit your documents through a link that will be made available on
Blackboard, assessment tab. The link will be available a few days before the assignment’s due date. Your
submission must include below declaration (as the first page of your assignment):
DECLARATION

TASK 1: SUMMARY OF IOT SOLUTION 150-300 words
1. This section includes a brief summary of your IoT problem and solution. Provide a
summary of problem under investigation, your proposed solution and key user/stakeholder
of your IoT system.
TASK 2: USE CASE DIAGRAM Max 300 words
1. Develop scenarios and use cases for the major activities related to your IoT solution for
your assigned stakeholder.
2. Develop a use case diagram representing the required functionalities for the stakeholders.
For your use case diagram you need to clearly identify:
• Actors (including main user and other potential stakeholders), use cases, system
• The relationship between actors and use cases, the relationship between use cases.
• Minimum 5 use cases are required excluding login, logout, and user registration to
the system.
• Use case diagram must represent the main functionalities of the system from a user
perspective.
• Describe your use case diagram and relationships in your diagram.
TASK 3: SEQUENCE DIAGRAM Max 300 words
1. Develop a sequence diagram representing how interactions and message exchange
occur between different systems (device, fog, cloud layers) and UI. For your sequence
diagram consider:
• Two scenarios where a user interact with the system (can be the same scenarios you
are using for your use case diagram)
• For each scenario develop a sequence of message exchange that occurs between
different systems in order to complete the requested action by user (i.e., a particular
functionality of your system).
TASK 4: SECURITY AND PRIVACY CONSIDERATION 150- 400 words
1. Discuss the potential security and privacy issues related to your IoT solution.
2. Explain what choices are required to provide effective privacy and security to the stockholders.
3. Discuss the ethical issues for your solution related to this collected data & resulting information.
3
TASK 5: UI DESIGN Max 200 words
1. Use Balsamiq or similar tool to develop 2-3 static screens for each key use case (two use
cases are acceptable). Graphics quality should be high and not distorted.
• Screens like login or settings (with no functionality) will not be considered for
marking.
• Focus on screens that demonstrate how users can benefit from each use case use.
The screens will reflect the benefits of using IoT solution to support key scenarios
based on different functionalities or stakeholders.
• The screens should be designed to be self-explanatory (with some instructions on
the screen). A brief caption for each screen is required.
